A FAMILY HISTORY

The Domaine traces its recent history to 1947 when Gabriel d’Ardhuy and Eliane André met. They became husband and wife and established the Domaine d’Ardhuy. Gabriel went on to acquire prized parcels of land in wine areas such as Puligny-Montrachet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and even Corton-Charlemagne.

Gabriel and Eliane passed on their passion for vineyards to their 7 daughters who today, with a team of equally passionate wine lovers, proudly keep the tradition of environmentally friendly viticulture and respect for the Terroir they have inherited.

Domaine d'Ardhuy, une famille de récoltant exploitant en coeur de Bourgogne

Its name derives from the title deeds registered at the Cathedral of Langres in the 10th Century.
The manor house is surrounded by 3.15 hectares of vines (just under 8 acres) which were originally planted by the monks of the Abbey of Cluny in the 10th Century. The wines produced there are red and white Clos des Langres “Monopole”. The ancestral home is built over vaulted cellars dating from the 17th Century and it contains an 18th Century “Parrot” wine press listed at the National Heritage of Historical Monuments.
Whilst the Clos des Langres is steeped in history it is also a working winery where all our wines are aged and then bottled (viz. the “au Clos des Langres” bottling mention on our labels).

OUR KNOW-HOW

The ethos at Domaine d’Ardhuy is to produce great wines from beautiful grapes which reflect the Terroir they come from. This is only possible thanks to meticulous husbandry in the vines according to the different seasons, respect for the Terroir, careful harvesting, precise and appropriate winemaking techniques, and expert handling of the barrel ageing and bottling. All this is done to ensure authenticity and quality.

Our specialist vinegrower / winemakers at Domaine d’Ardhuy and its 125 plots in 45 appellations have the know-how to master everything between growing of the grapes to bottling of the wines. The daily and seasonal tasks include ploughing of the soil between the vines, pruning of the vine branches and removal of suckers, thinning of the branches, and manual harvesting of high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.

After all the hard work in the vineyards it’s time in August and September to gather the grapes and In true traditional Burgundy fashion the harvest is done by hand and not by machine. Since 2017 Vincent, our Œnologist, Wine Maker and Estate Manager, and his team have expertly managed our wine production. He seeks finesse and elegance in the wines and uses oak sparingly. He creates a balance between body and “tension” to ensure wines which are pure and fresh and reflect the originality of the Terroir where the grapes actually grow.

OUR ETHOS

All the vineyard holdings of Domaine d’Ardhuy were certified Organic and Biodynamic from the 2012 vintage onwards. However, after several challenging vintages due to the vagaries of the weather we made the decision in 2018 to put certification temporarily to one side in order to revamp our agricultural practices. Through our continuing respect for Terroir and the environment the aim is gradually to return to Organic certification in 2023. From the 2019 vintage we have been certified HEV Level 3 (High Environmental Value).
