Etymology

At Savigny-lès-Beaune, the two plots of this climat are situated above Moutier Amet, below Les Jarrons and Les Rouvrettes. Consequently we wonder whether “bantons” couldn’t stem from Gallic *BANNO “horns”. This word applied to names of heights, mountain peaks and headlands: Montagne de Banne and Mont du Ban, for example, in the Drôme département. Couldn’t “Nar” be here a form taken by the adjective Noir – from Latin NIGER “black, dark”? This name could allude to black heights, because they were covered in woods. There is after all much wooded land in and around the village of Savigny.

The vineyard plot(s)

Massal selection of Pinot Noir grafted onto 161-49 rootstocks. Old vines over 60 years old. This low-yielding plot produces small, loose bunches of very concentrated grapes due to the coulure (poor set) and millerandage (poor fertilisation) caused by the court-noué (fanleaf) virus.

The soil and subsoil

This plot is located at the foot of the Côte d’Or slope between Beaune and Savigny and possesses very different soil from the north side of the Combe valley of Savigny. The ground is made up of overlapping layers of various screes resulting from the erosion of the overlying slopes on top of a layer of approximately 1 metre-thick silt which in turn is on top of a layer of gravel. The ground is quite well-drained and heats up quickly. There are however sufficient reserves of water in the ground to prevent excess water stress in the vines but not so much as to cause root asphyxia in wet conditions. The result is consistently good quality grapes each vintage.

The vinification

According to the vintage conditions.

The exposition

This east-facing plot is on a gentle slope. An altitude of around 250 m.
