Etymology

This Puligny-Montrachet lieu-dit bears the same name as the wood and also the mountain nearby that is locally called “La Petite Montagne”. Sources flow there intermittently in spring. Can we relate this place name to the Pre-Celtic root *TAR/*TER/*TOR – shortened here to two letters *TR – “fast flowing water”, to the origin of the Terron river name at Santenay? The final syllable “-in” can be often found in some Côte river names such as the Limozin at Meursault, for example.
