Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Petit Maupertui 2019

Étymologie

Vougeot due its fame to the monks of Cîteaux who established their buildings of exploitation there in 1167. The famous Clos-de-Vougeot contains the historic cellar of the Cistercian monks. The castle was built later, during the Renaissance. Today it hosts the famous Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and its Chapters.

Vougeot is the dialectal diminutive of the Vouge, the small river that rises in the village and crosses it. The Vouge is said to come from the Celtic vidubium, which means a sickle, or from vidu, which means forest.

Petit Maupertui: The etymology may come from “pertus” in Latin. Not that we think that there was a well at this location but rather that it is the expression of a slight valley in the landscape located in the width of the alluvial cone of the combe d’Orveau.
