Etymology

This word from Old French – from late Latin PETRARIUM “stone quarry” derived from Latin PETRA “rock, boulder, stone” – designates a quarry, where stones and rocks were extracted for building dwellings and edifices. In the Burgundian vineyard toponymy, this word is found more often than the term Carrière (quarry) to designate the same reality. The viticultural Côte is the land of stone. Open cast quarries are still in activity here and there at Comblanchien or Chassagne-Montrachet, for example But most have been filled in to become vineyards. That is why climats and lieux-dits whose names are formed on Perrière point us to their previous existence. However, some of them were not quarries, but lands close to ancient metaled roads. This just shows the richness of the place name and its multiple meanings.
